Rotary Dictionary Project
Tangelo Park Elementary School
Helping our local schools by fostering the joy of reading among 3rd graders
While many of us take reading for granted, the fact is that reading (printed) books is on a decline. With technology being ubiquitous and accessible in everything from smartphones and tablets to computer systems, children are reading more on a screen than on a printed book. This may seem harmless—after all, we live in the 21st century—but by depending on “screen time” prevents children from developing a passion for the knowledge that only a book can provide.
Our Rotary Club of International Drive is proud to be an active participant of the international Rotary Dictionary Project, where we purchase encyclopedic dictionaries and gift them to 3rd graders at a local elementary school. The fact is that many children attend school for years without every owning a book of their own. Our goal is simple: we want to encourage children to grab a dictionary and lookup facts, words and learn about many more topics in hopes of awakening interest for facts-based information.
